When wildfires burn, they can push AQI readings hundreds of kilometres from the fire front into the Hazardous range within hours. Wildfire smoke AQI is different from everyday urban pollution — it arrives fast, affects huge geographic areas, and carries a particularly toxic cocktail of fine particles, carbon monoxide and volatile compounds. Knowing how to respond when wildfire smoke AQI spikes can genuinely protect your health.
Wildfire smoke contains a higher proportion of ultrafine particles (below 0.1 micrometres) compared to traffic pollution. These particles penetrate even deeper into the lungs than standard PM2.5. Additionally, wildfire smoke contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide — all acutely toxic compounds that urban pollution typically contains in much lower concentrations.
Furthermore, wildfire smoke AQI can jump from Good to Hazardous within a single afternoon as wind direction shifts. Consequently, routine AQI monitoring is especially important during fire season, even if you live hundreds of kilometres from any active fire.

Standard AQI health categories apply directly to wildfire smoke readings, but there are important nuances for smoke events specifically.
AQI 0–50 (Good): Smoke has not reached your area or has dispersed. No action needed. However, continue monitoring if fires are active in your region — conditions can change within hours.
AQI 51–100 (Moderate): Light smoke is present. Sensitive individuals — those with asthma, COPD or heart disease — should reduce outdoor time. Consider closing windows if you can smell smoke.
AQI 101–150 (USG — Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Sensitive groups should stay indoors. Healthy adults can go outside briefly but should avoid prolonged exertion. Close all windows and run a HEPA purifier indoors.
AQI 151–200 (Unhealthy): Everyone should limit outdoor time. Wear an N95 mask if you must go outside. Keep indoor air as clean as possible — close gaps under doors and around windows if smoke is infiltrating.
AQI 201–300 (Very Unhealthy) and 301+ (Hazardous): Stay indoors with all windows and doors closed. Run HEPA purifiers in every occupied room. Avoid all physical exertion outdoors. If you are in this range for more than 24 hours, consider relocating temporarily if you have respiratory or heart conditions.

If you need to be outside during high wildfire smoke AQI, wear an N95 or N99 respirator — not a cloth mask or surgical mask, which provide negligible protection against PM2.5. Fit the mask tightly over your nose and bridge, ensuring no air leaks around the edges. Additionally, keep outdoor time as brief as possible and avoid any physical exertion that increases your breathing rate.
N95 respirators filter at least 95% of particles 0.3 micrometres and larger when properly fitted. N99 masks filter 99%. KN95 masks (Chinese standard) offer similar filtration to N95 when genuine, but quality varies more widely — use a verified brand. Surgical masks and cloth masks do not seal around the face and allow smoke particles to bypass the filter through gaps. Therefore, they offer very limited protection during high wildfire smoke AQI events.
For children, look for respirators with a paediatric fit, as standard adult N95s leave large gaps on smaller faces. For elderly adults or anyone who finds breathing through an N95 difficult during exercise, take more frequent breaks and reduce exertion.
All people are affected by wildfire smoke AQI, but certain groups face disproportionate risk. Children have faster breathing rates and developing lungs, making them particularly susceptible to PM2.5 damage.
