You open an AQI tool, tap “Allow Location” — and nothing happens. Or the tool keeps spinning, shows the wrong city, or displays a reading from three hours ago. Air quality tools rely on browser permissions, GPS signals and live data feeds, so when any one of these breaks, the whole experience falls apart. This guide covers every reason why AQI is not working and how to fix each issue in under two minutes.
Before diving into fixes, it helps to understand what AQI tools actually do. They request your GPS position from the browser, pass those coordinates to a server, fetch the nearest monitoring station data, and display the result. Therefore, a problem at any step — permissions, GPS signal, server response or network connection — can make AQI stop working entirely.

This resolves the majority of cases where AQI is not working on desktop. Chrome remembers your location choices per site. If you previously clicked “Block”, Chrome won’t ask again — it will silently deny location requests.

Alternatively, go to Chrome Settings → Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Location → Blocked list — and remove the AQI site from blocked sites. After refreshing, the tool will request your location again and load correctly.
On mobile, both Safari and Chrome inherit the device’s system-level location setting. Consequently, if location services are disabled at the device level, no browser tool can access your position regardless of browser permissions.
iPhone (iOS): Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → turn on. Then scroll down to Safari (or Chrome) → set to “While Using the App”. Refresh the AQI page.
Android: Swipe down from the top → tap the Location icon to enable it. Open Chrome → tap the three dots → Settings → Site Settings → Location → Allowed list. Add the AQI site if it is not there, or remove it from the Blocked list.
VPNs reroute your internet traffic through a server in a different city or country. As a result, some AQI tools that rely on IP-based geolocation (rather than GPS) will show results for the wrong location — or fail entirely because the IP address does not match the GPS coordinates.
Try pausing your VPN and reloading the page. If the AQI loads correctly, the VPN was the cause. You can either keep the VPN paused while using AQI tools, or switch to a VPN server in your actual city.
If the AQI tool loads but shows stale or incorrect data, a corrupted or outdated cache is often the cause. Browsers cache page data aggressively. Therefore, you may be seeing a stored version of the page rather than a fresh one.
To clear cache in Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + Delete (Mac). Select “Cached images and files” and click Clear. Reload the AQI page. Alternatively, do a hard refresh with Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac) to bypass the cache for a single page load.
Privacy extensions such as Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin and Ghostery can block location APIs as part of their tracker-blocking ruleset. Additionally, some anti-fingerprinting tools specifically block the Geolocation API.
To test whether an extension is the problem, open the AQI tool in an Incognito or Private window (which disables most extensions by default). If it works in Incognito but not in your regular browser, an extension is the cause. Disable extensions one by one to find the culprit, then whitelist the AQI site within that extension’s settings.
If location detection continues to fail after trying all the fixes above, switch to manual search. The AQI by ZIP code tool requires no location permission at all. Simply enter your ZIP code or postal code, select your country, and click Check AQI. The result comes from the nearest monitoring station to your entered code — typically within a few AQI points of what GPS-based detection would show.
The ZIP code tool supports the US, India, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and 30+ additional countries. It is the most reliable fallback when AQI is not working via GPS.
Air quality monitoring equipment goes offline for maintenance, calibration and technical faults. When this happens, AQI tools either show no data or fall back to the next-nearest station, which may be in a different part of your city.
If you see an unusually high or low reading that does not match current weather or visibility conditions, compare your result against another nearby city using the compare two cities tool. Furthermore, you can cross-check against IQAir or AirNow to see if the issue is with the monitoring network rather than the tool itself.
If the tool loads but displays results for a city you are not in, this typically means GPS detection succeeded but matched you to a monitoring station in a different area — usually because the nearest station is across a city boundary. This is normal behaviour when you live near a city edge or in a suburban area without a dedicated monitoring station.
